Description:
Yue stoneware model of a chicken coop with two birds roosting on the roof. The model has glossy greenish-grey glaze. There are two square holes cut into one side, and incised lines on body to imitate a wooden structure.

Two square holes for the birds to enter and exit the coop are carved into one side. Potters achieved this thin olive-green glaze colour by combining a mixture of wood ash and the clay also used for the Yue stoneware body. Local people from the area we now call Zhejiang province used this ceramic model as a substitute for a real bird house, together with other models, for burial.
