Period:Qing dynasty Production date:1628-1700 (circa)
Materials:stoneware
Technique:glazed, fahua,
Subjects:calligraphy footwear
Dimensions:Height: 8.40 centimetres Length: 7 centimetres
Description:
Stoneware model of a boot in the ‘fahua’ palette. This hollow mould-made stoneware model of a boot is coloured inside and out with aubergine glaze and with undulating bands in turquoise. An unglazed stippled base suggests the different texture of a cotton sole. The body material and flaking glaze indicate that it was made in northern China in Shanxi province. The function of this boot is unclear, but it may have been used to contain water for adding to solid Chinese ink for calligraphy.
