Description:
‘Famille rose’ jug and cover with an English coat of arms. This small jug is decorated below the spout with a coat of arms and a crest with a helmet with elaborate plumes and the French motto: LOYAL AU MOAT (sic), within a gold-and-black rope border which is repeated on the cover. The rims of both jug and cover are further decorated with a spearhead border.

Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994:The arms have been identified as belonging to the Barnwell family and the service to which this cream jug belonged was probably ordered by Michael Barnwell, an employee of the English East India Company who died in 1792 (Howard, 1974, p. 416). The design was probably copied from a bookplate such as the one illustrated, also in the British Museum (BM Franks 1580).
