The glaze fills the double outlines of the incised and combed design of peony flowers with overlapping lotus petals around the foot. At this time, Ding potters worked with kilns shaped like giant 饅頭 (mantou ‘steamed bread buns’). Potters used coal as fuel and the sulphur content of the coal, combined with the oxidising atmosphere of the kiln, gave the ceramics an ivory tone. Officials offered high-quality products such as this vase as tribute to the Northern Song court.
