Comments:The flat, thick plaque is incised to represent a taotie mask with bottlehorns and a central panel with herringbone design with a single perforation through the forehead between the eyes. The underside is plain except for a groove running close to the base. Late Shang. See New York 1939, Loo 1950, Ip Yee 1983, and Keverne 1991. By contrast with the previous taotie (cat.no.194) [2014,AsiaLoan,1.128], face, this one is very flat. It is carved from a relatively thick slice of jade which is almost rectangular in outline. The creature has large slanting eyes, a pair of flattened nostrils and two bottle horns, one on each side of a small vertical crest. While most of the incised lines occur in pairs, those on the crest are in very dense, neatly packed v-shapes. Below the crest is a large central hole. There are also two small v-shaped ears. This substantial carving is boldly carved and highly polished. This carving departs further than the previous one from the taotie faces found in bronze design. It can be compared with excavated jades from Anyang. See Rawson 1995, p.221, cat.no.12.17.
