Comments:See Ethdoc 97 – Notes on the Collection. This is presumably:’5.7 Paraffin lamp. This t ype of paraffin lamp, made in China, is in wide use by the Baka these days. They are cheaply obtained by the Bantu villagers who use them in their own houses and who occasionally pass one on to a Baka in exchange for work or forest products. The Baka find such lamps not only useful and easily portable, but they are also desired objects which give their owners a sense of prestige. The Bantu find this a useful gift to make to a Baka because a man who has a lamp will always be in need of paraffin; as paraffin can only be obtained in the village store for cash, the Baka are therefore dependent on the Bantu for this commodity and will find it difficult to refuse the Bantu honey or meat whenever it is demanded of him.’
