Description:
Porcelain libation vessel of ancient bronze jue form with three legs, a loop handle and two short columns rising from the rim. Covered in dark blue glaze, with two five-clawed dragons, a flaming pearl and cloud reserved in white. Traces of gilding on the biscuit. There is an inscription on the base.

Comments:Published PDF date : Ming Jiajing 1522-1566 Room 95 label text:PDF A561Cup in the form of an ancient bronze jue Chinese emperors required innovative glazes, they also commissioned wares which followed historic styles. This high-fired cup is archaistic in two senses. Firstly it is modelled in the form of an ancient bronze ritual vessel made for heating wine called a jue. Furthermore contrasting white dragons on a blue ground evoke some of the finest porcelains of the early fourteenth century. The first Ming emperor, Hongwu (AD1368–98) already ordered white porcelain vessels of this jue form for ritual use.
