Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1488-1505 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, underglazed,
Dimensions:Height: 4.50 centimetres
Description:
Porcelain globular jarlet with underglaze blue decoration. This globular jarlet has a raised narrow neck, sloping shoulders, tapering sides and a flat unglazed base. It is painted with a collar of three ‘ruyi’ cloud panels containing spirals and stylized flowers with beaded tassels in between. The stylized flowers possibly represent a variety of chrysanthemum with spindly petals.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Such small jarlets were made to contain medicines or oil (chrysanthemums are a symbol of longevity). The poor quality of the porcelain body and lack of care in the execution of the design suggest that the jar was made at a private kiln in Jingdezhen and was probably traded with its contents abroad. Originally such jars would have been fitted with small domed covers with lotus-bud finials. An intact example is in the Hong Kong Bank of Canada Collection.
