Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1488-1522 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, underglazed,
Subjects:insect lotus
Dimensions:Height: 10.50 centimetres
Description:
Porcelain jar with underglaze blue decoration. This jar has a narrow raised neck, rounded body and tapering foot. A flowering lotus scroll and insects are shown on either side, around the neck are stylized clouds with ‘ruyi’ heads forming a collar and spirals surround the foot. The glaze is a rather dull yellow and the blue is very dark indeed and rather monotone. The base is unglazed, revealing a pale grey-white clay body.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:This jar would originally have had a domed overhanging cover with a lotus-bud finial. Two similar porcelain blue-and-white lidded jars with lotus scroll were excavated in 1972 at Jiangyang, Jiangsu province, from the tomb of Xia Lianggui (1437-1513). Although one of these is decorated with vertical stripes around the foot like stylized lappets and the other is painted with lappets, they both have the same ‘ruyi’-head fancy swirl border around the shoulder. Such a yellow-tinged glaze suggests that too much oxygen was admitted to the kiln during the firing process.
