Description:
Cizhou-type jar in iron-brown on a cream slip ground with a transparent glaze. This ovoid jar has a short neck and wide mouth with an unglazed base. It is painted with a design in iron brown on a cream slip ground beneath a transparent glaze. The main band of decoration shows a lobed cartouche with a comical lion-dog chewing on a thread from a brocade ball. Above him in the sky among the clouds are a dark round sun and a pale crescent moon which is depicted horizontally. Both are labelled with their respective Chinese characters 日 ‘ri’ and 月 ‘yue’. On the other side, a similar cartouche frames a lotus plant. Between these panels on a hatched ground is a reserved lotus on one side and two images of peonies on the other, one reserved on a hatched ground, the other painted on a cream ground. Below is a single band of leaf scroll between double lines. Above around the shoulder are two narrow bands, both with panels framing birds, a repeated sun and moon with characters and clouds, lotus and flower scroll. Inside the jar is glazed dark brown. The rim is broken and repaired with coarse clay.
