Description:
Lobed porcelain jar with underglaze blue decoration. This oval jar is moulded with twelve lobed sections, a low neck and foot. The decoration, which is sketchily outlined in underglaze blue and not infilled, shows tree-peony panels alternating with scholars twice and with a camellia once, the rim with vertical lines. The base is glazed but unmarked.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Seven wine pots with overhead handles and spouts recovered from the Witte Leeuw cargo of 1613 are decorated in a similar hastily executed ‘pencilled’ blue outline style. They too have lobed exteriors with decoration divided into vertical panels by thin parallel blue lines. Similarities with these pieces suggest that the present jar also dates to the early seventeenth century.
