Description:
Ovoid porcelain jar with underglaze blue decoration. This drum-shaped vase has a wide mouth and flat unglazed base, depressed in the centre. Its blurred underglaze blue decoration is typical of late Ming porcelain. A fire-breathing ‘qilin’, seated in a garden, is depicted gazing at the sun emerging from clouds. The mythical creature is flanked by stylized rocks and plantains. It is inscribed with eight characters written in two vertical lines, ‘Bingzi zhixia Yun Linzi shu’ [Written by Yun Linzi in the summer of the cyclical year ‘bingzi’ (1636)], and bears an illegible two-character seal mark in a double square.
