Comments:Smith et al 1990This is an early example of ware with a thick opaque white glaze supporting rich coloured enamels, a forerunner of the Kakiemon style. The composition is a reinterpretation of a Ming Chinese garden scene, in which the Japanese artisan has typically arranged the elements of fences, veranda, flowers and clouds to produce a pleasing pattern and an emotional impact rather than a rational composition.
