Description:
Six-lobed porcelain jar with overglaze polychrome enamels. This jar is crudely made, with many flaws to the glaze and with degraded enamels. Its ovoid body is lobed into six parts and it has a short neck with a narrow finger-wide opening and dish mouth. It stands on a gritty chipped foot ring and has a glazed base. It is painted over the glaze with red peony flower sprays and three of the Eight Treasures of Buddhism – the canopy, conch shell and vase – each with a separate ‘lingzhi’ fungus below. Flowers are individually placed on the remaining three lobes. Around the neck is a collar of twelve feathery leaves in turquoise and black punctuated by red enamel lines and with a ring of turquoise scroll around the mouth. It was possibly used to store oil.
