Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The silver mount with spiralling ribbing on the cover of the present jar was probably added in Mughal India or Turkey. Ewers with round bellies with this type of ice-cream swirl design were made in both north India and the Deccan in the sixteenth century and Turkey in the seventeenth century. Three similar jars without matching covers are in the Topkapi Saray Museum in Istanbul. Another example, with four monster mask handles on the shoulder, is in the Burghley House collection and was documented between 1688 and 1690 in an inventory of goods, at the request of the Third Earl of Devonshire.
