Description:
Eight-lobed porcelain jar with underglaze blue decoration. This heavily potted eight-lobed jar has a recessed base and a raised neck. The foot is thick and gritty and the base is glazed. It is painted in underglaze blue with an all-over pattern of gourd vines.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Many different varieties of gourd are cultivated throughout China. Most are indigenous although interestingly the now ubiquitous water melon was in fact introduced from western Asia. A slightly smaller jar, one of three of this shape with similar decoration, was recovered from the Hatcher ship wreck, dating to about 1643.
