Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1573-1644 (circa)
Materials:earthenware
Technique:glazed, slipped,
Subjects:lotus
Dimensions:Height: 10 centimetres (with cover)
Description:
Ribbed jar and cover with turquoise and yellow glaze. In contrast to BM 1938.0524.103, which is globular, this jar has broad shoulders and tapers in towards the base. Slip is trailed vertically into each ribbed groove, terminating with a ‘ruyi’ head at the shoulder. The overhanging cover is more steeply domed and its lotus-bud finial plugs into an opening at the top. Both jar and cover are decorated with a dark turquoise monochrome glaze and the finial has traces of amber glaze. The earthenware body has a pinkish hue but the base, inside the jar and lid are covered with a chalky-white coating.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Various features suggest that this jar should be considered in the same category as BM 1938.0524.103. A similar turquoise appears on the nose of a lobster-shaped water dropper decorated in ‘su sancai’ enamels in the collection of Hiromu Honda and Noriki Shimazu and the broader ribbing is also a feature of published small jars of this type of ceramic. As with BM 1938.0524.103, in Japan this type of jar is used to contain tea.
