Description:
Shawl jacket; part of woman’s market day/festival costume As.1998.1.234 to 236. Base cloth of hand-woven off-white cotton. Decoration focussed on separate back yoke and sleeves. Yoke made up of two pieces, long, with added collar seamed at back with triangular insertion. Black shiny bought cloth frames a dark blue ground covered with minute cross stitch in a repeated pattern of diamonds with interlocked sides, colours alternating maroon and white/black and white, with orange and green centres, in silk thread. Sleeves have three bands: i) band of wax resist cotton dyed dark indigo with design of bordered squares with interior pattern of diagonal crosses; ii) patchwork in three stripes of red and white and printed bought cotton rectangles separated by bands of bought maroon cotton; iii) turquoise bought cloth.
