Description:
An under-jacket (sleeveless); part of monk’s (‘abbot’s’?) attire. Made from many pieces of dark red twill woven wool cloth, fulled. Centre front opening, overlapping panel [21.5 cms wide] lined with red damask silk cloth; hangs below front hemline. Three different styles of damask and brocaded cloths stitched to upper front and back of under-jacket; pleated under and at back of sleeve openings; red and yellow damask (with ‘shou’ (longevity/immortality) roundels and cloud motifs) and dense metal brocaded cloth (tarnished silver metal-wrapped thread and gold (?) leaf on paper (?) strips. Red wool flap covering shoulders piped with blue cotton (?) braiding. Ground unevenly dyed; dyed in the piece?
