Description:
Jacket; part of girl’s festival and market costume As.1998.1.339 to 342. Base cloth of cotton dyed purple with sheen. Decorated on front with bought figured silk? damask dyed green, now turning bronze. Neck and front facing formed of applied strips of embroidery and woven pieces with weft-faced patterns at selvedges. On left front is small embroidered motif peculiar to area, of shallow zig-zag in rectangle. On shoulders of bands of tens trips of embroidered or plain coloured cloth on red ground. Back is solidly covered with horizontal and vertical applied embroidered strips interspersed with plain shiny green satin. Sleeves have applied band of decoration of woven and embroidered strips with blue cotton cloth on cuffs. Ties have hand-woven warp-faced pattern. Colours throughout are shiny green, red, green and strong blue with some white and yellow.

Comments:Text from Corrigan 2001: 54: huangping county, qiandongnan prefecture. Female Festive Jacket. Collared jacket with central front opening, of which the front is longer than the back. The neck and front facing is continuous, widening towards the bottom at the left front. The inner layer is cotton, dyed locally, and the outer layer is bought figured damask, originally dyed green but now acquiring a metallic bronze hue. The decoration is made up of narrow applied strips of embroidery as well as woven pieces, with weft-faced patterned pieces joined at the selvedges.
