Woman’s jacket, made of cotton, silk and red twill wool; with embroidery, batik or wax resist and applique decoration. Lining of hand-woven unbleached cotton. Top layer in patchwork of numerous colours.

Comments:This is one of the most carefully made and highly decorated Miao jackets displaying much attention to detail, hardly any raw edges and very fine hand stitching – see the appliqued vertical strips of silk. The red wool twill cloth is obviously a precious inclusion and is most likely to be an import from Europe.Text from Corrigan 2001: 39: danzhai county, qiandongnan prefecture. Female Festive Jacket. Short collared jacket, slightly flared at the bottom, with wide sleeves and front opening. A rare style, probably not worn today, which according to Chinese sources dates to the late nineteenth century. The base lining is hand-woven unbleached cotton, the top layer a patchwork of many different cloths. Both back and front have horizontal bands of decoration, which include embroidery and appliqué. The sleeves are banded with appliqué, wax resist, shiny black cotton and pattern darning.
