Description:
Yue stoneware rectangular ink-stone with straight sides. The ink-stone has thick grey green glaze, except on upper surface and rim of base. There are parallel lines and an inscription incised on the base.

As the grinding continues, more water is added and the liquid ink pools in the sunken part of the stone. Ink-stones should be abrasive enough to grind the ink and smooth enough not to damage the fine hairs of the brush. This example is incised on the base 元符三年仲秋佳製(Yuan Fu san nian zhong qiu jia zhi ‘ Beautifully made in mid-autumn of the third lunar year of Yuan Fu’ [equivalent to AD1100]).
