Description:
‘Gui’-shaped porcelain incense buener with elephant-head handles and ‘fahua’-type decoration. This porcelain censer is modelled after an ancient ritual bronze food vessel called a ‘gui’. It has a round body, thickened broad mouth and stylized elephant-head handles and sits on a stepped pedestal foot. Its decoration is outlined in trailed slip and infilled with turquoise, yellow and white enamels on a dark blue ground. Both sides show a white peony, rocks and a yellow peony. Inside it is glazed only at the top. The base is glazed. The porcelain body and palette of ‘fahua’ enamels, dominated by a purple blue made from a combination of copper oxide and cobalt, are typical of the Jingdezhen kilns.
