Description:
Stoneware incense-stick holder in the form of a lion-dog on a pedestal base with ‘sancai’ glaze on the biscuit. This figure of a lion-dog is modelled, seated on its haunches on a rectangular pedestal base. It has open jaws, a curly mane and bulging eyes, its right leg is straight and its left is raised and rests on the top of a pole on which a brocade ball may be slid. Attached to its back is a broken tube for containing burning incense sticks. ‘Sancai’ green, yellow and aubergine glazes have been painted directly on to the biscuit-fired body, lending the colours a dull cast.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:This incense-stick holder may have been produced at a kiln which manufactured glazed roof tiles. A glazed ridge tile decorated with a figure of a lion-dog, possibly from a zodiacal series, dating to the Wanli period, is in the De Laszlo Collection, Gulbenkian Museum, Durham.
