Description:
Pair of porcelain hat-stands with underglaze blue decoration. The upper part of each of these stands is a sphere with a hole at the top surrounded by six other finger-sized holes; the lower part is a hollow stand with a solid recessed base with four domed openings with lobed edges. Each sphere is decorated with two roundels surrounding a diamond-shaped panel containing the same Arabic inscription and with four ‘ruyi’ cloud scrolls. In between these are two single stylized lotus blooms. At the top, surrounding the holes, is classic scroll, bordered by a six-lobed double ring. Each stand is painted with ‘ruyi’ heads and the openings are bordered with scroll work. The base is marked with a six-character Zhengde reign mark in a double ring. The glaze on each is matte and it has been suggested that they were damaged in a fire.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Various suggestions have been made for the use of these objects, including as hat stands, vases, perfumers and pen holders. The holes would be unnecessary if they were hat stands. Most probably they were used as brush-pen holders, or lo contain flowers. An identical example is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei.
