Description:
Hanging scroll. The eagle is a symbol of power. The Chinese word for eagle, ying, is the first character of the term for hero, yingxiong. Therefore to present someone with a painting of an eagle is to call him a hero. In his inscription, Ying Bao says he made this painting ‘at the request of brother Bo Ang’, but the person to whom it was dedicated is unknown. Painted with the fingertip in ink and colours on paper.

Comments:Ying Bao was a former Manchu officer who became a painter at the age of 30 after being injured. He often painted with his fingers, as in this scroll, rather than a brush.
