Description:
Porcelain ‘guan’ jar with underglaze blue decoration. This porcelain wine jar has broad rounded shoulders and a short neck with a thickened edge. Its sides taper in, then flare slightly at the foot. Its decoration is divided into bands with phoenix on a stylized lotus scroll ground, with a band of lappets below and a ‘ruyi’ collar around the neck containing single lotus flowers growing above a lotus head with foliage. In between these are beaded gadroons and half flower heads. Above is a border of ‘ruyi’ heads and a simplified key-fret design around the neck. Inside the jar is glazed. The base is unglazed and has been filled in where a large section was missing.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:This type of very dense decoration in a dark cobalt blue is typical of Hongzhi period ‘min yao’ wares.
