Description:
Large porcelain ‘guan’ jar and cover with overglaze red, green and yellow enamels. The jar has a narrow neck with a thickened lip and rounded sides that taper in then out at the foot. The design is outlined in red and infilled with red, green and yellow enamels. Two pairs of four-clawed dragons are depicted chasing a flaming pearl through ‘ruyi’ cloud skies, prancing alternately on their fore and hind legs, with rocks and waves below. A wide border of lappets is painted below and above is a band of alternating red and green triangles, another of flower scrolls and a third of two phoenix flying on a lotus scroll ground. The overhanging cover is domed and has an undulating edge painted to evoke the texture of a lotus leaf. The knob is moulded as a lion, crouching over a brocade ball, with a further brocade ball painted on the lid below the lion’s tail. Surrounding this is a band of lotus flowers, depicted in profile, some growing the right way up and others upside down. It is glazed inside and the base is unglazed.
