Comments:Rawson 1995:As a result of contact with the steppe the Han seem to have developed an interest in emphasising the silhouettes of animals rather than their surfaces. In early Chinese design, especially bronze design, an overwhelming concern with surface detail had continually threatened to detract from the clarity of animals forms. Strong silhouttes were, however, employed in the state of Jin, an area in contact with the steppe region. Bronze belt hooks in the form of S-shaped felines show the influence of the emphatic line used on nomadic bronzes. This clarity of design was also to affect jades, for example, a ring in the tomb of the King of Nan Yue.
