Skirt; part of female festival costume As.1998.1.34 to 37. Skirt is full and gathered with complex geometric patterning and red applique. Made from hand-woven undyed ramie as base cloth; constructed in three sections. Decorated in middle section with wax resist dyed indigo pattern in three bands, some embroidered detail.

Comments:Skirt is made from traditional and modern materials. Ramie is a traditional textile used only at the top and as a backing.Text from Corrigan 2001: 36: Luodian county, Qiannan prefecture. Female festive skirt. The top base cloth is handwoven undyed ramie. The middle section is manufactured cotton cloth decorated with wax resist and red and yellow cotton applique, and the bottom is a finer indigo dyed ramie with multicolured applique, including tiny ‘silk felt’ pieces. The bottom of the skirt is red manufactured cotton cloth.
