Comments:Published PDF date : Ming 17th century Room 95 label text:PDF B676Wine ewer in the form of the moon with immortalsThis porcelain wine ewer is modelled in the shape of a moon, supported on swirling clouds, with a spout on one side. On one side is 嫦娥 Chang E – the goddess who, according to Chinese mythology, lives in the moon. She is accompanied by a hare who pounds herbs for the elixir of immortality on the moon. On the other side are two male figures visiting the moon. It has been suggested that these are the Tang dynasty emperor Ming Huang (AD 713–756) and Lo Gongyuan. Ming Huang was Yang Guifei’s lover.Porcelain with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province
