Description:
Porcelain ewer with underglaze blue and ‘wucai’-style polychrome enamels. This pear-shaped ewer has a lobed body, long neck with dish mouth and flared foot ring. Its spout is square in cross-section and turns out at the tip. The long straight handle has a ‘makara’ head at the neck join and a ‘ruyi’ head at the other end. A loop at the top of the handle would have been used to secure a lid in the metal-work original on which this is based. Above the underglaze blue dragon on the neck is the character ‘wan’ [ten thousand] and on the other side over a red dragon ‘shou’ [long life], thus expressing the wish for eternal life. Eight alternating flowering and fruiting plants are shown in the lobed panels below. The base carries a six-character Wanli reign mark in a double ring.
