Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is listed as: “14 A Tartar Girl, in the act of steering a Boat, those who are unmarried wear the hair comb’d down to the eyebrows, (but wives wear it comb’d back very tight and smooth,) The Tartar women never confine the feet in small shoes like the Chinese, & are fond of wearing rings of silver on the wrists, fingers & in the Ears – ” The Embassy anchored off Macau on 20th June 1793 on their arrival in China and were again in the area prior to their departure for England in March 1794. This figure does not appear in “The Costume of China” but is the subject of plate 16 in “Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Chinese” (published 1814; etched lettering below the image: “Published Jan.y 1814, by J. Murray, Albemarle Street”). In this image the girl is positioned behind the steering-post of the boat and is pointing ahead with her right hand; she is also depicted within a more defined landscape setting. The boat girls of Macau later became a favourite subject of the artist George Chinnery (1774-1852) who settled in Macau in 1825; he exhibited ‘Assor, a Tanka Boat Girl of Macao’ at the Royal Academy in 1844.
