Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “25. Portrait of the Fou-yen of Can-ton, as he sat at an english collation given by the Ambassador to the Viceroy, on the 8.th of Jan.y 1794, in the Hall of the Company’s Factory at Canton, The Fou-yen is an officer next in command to the Viceroy, the ball on his Cap was of coral, which colour indicates the second order of Nobility, answering in rank to a Marquis with us – the highest colour’d ball is a transparent blood red. The imaginary bird embroidered on the badge against his breast shows him to be of the civil department, the beads over his neck are of coral – “There are three other versions of this watercolour: India Office Library collection, BL; Ashmolean Museum (with the artist’s monogram), Oxford; BL (additional manuscripts).For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
