Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “51 Ruins of a Bridge at San-cien-wey, a Town about 20 Miles distant from the City Tong-tchcou, where the Embassy finish’d their journey up the Pay-ho, Many people were assembled on this ruin to have a full view of the Embassy.” There are numerous references in both Alexander’s unpublished travel journal (BL) and the various published accounts of the Embassy to the interest it incited amongst the Chinese as its members travelled through the country. For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
