Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “28. The Deity, Providence, Vide Sir Geo: Stauntons Account of the Embassy. Page 84. Vol. 2.d.” An engraving of Alexander’s watercolour appears on page 85 of the second volume of Staunton’s “Authentic Account”, inserted in the middle of a description of the temple and its interior in the words of the principal painter Hickey. Prior to this, the idol is described thus: “The most conspicuous deity in this temple was a personification of Providence, under a female figure, holding in her hand a circular plate, with an eye depicted on it. This figure displayed some grace and dignity.” (p. 84) In the `list of the engravings’ which is included at the beginning of the first volume, the plate being held by the idol is identified as being brass, and the vessel at her feet as bronze. The engraving also appears as plate 10 (etched letters below image: “Alexander del.t”, “Dadley, sculp.t” and “Pub: Sept. 1. 1797, by I. Stockdale, Piccadilly”) of “An Historical Account of the Embassy to the Emperor of China” (an abridgement of Staunton’s earlier account, also published in 1797), in which the description of the idol has slight variations: “[the temple contained] a deity personifying Providence, under a graceful female figure, who held in her hand a circular plate, having an eye portrayed upon it. The annexed engraving is an exact representation.” (p. 284)For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
