Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “58. The habitation of a Mandarin. – Vide the Costume of China.” Plate 23 (aquatint) of “The Costume of China” (published 1805; etched lettering under image: “W Alexander fecit” and “London. Published Dec.r 1.st 1799 by G: Nicol, Pallmall”) illustrates more edifices within the wall than in the BM drawing, in addition to showing flags flying from the flagpoles. Alexander informs his reader that these distinguish the habitation of a mandarin. “The Costume of China” plate also contains more boats on the body of water and different figures.
