Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “59 A Pagoda in a mutilated state having the Spire & Galleries destroyd.” This particular pagoda as depicted by Alexander was etched by William Byrne as Plate 33 of Staunton’s “Account” (etched lettering under image: “W. Alexander del.”, “W. Byrne sculp.t” and “London, Published April 12, 1796, by G. Nicol.”) as part of a view illustrating a wider prospect and much more populated with other buildings and people. See 1871,0812.692 for an unfinished example. There are also watercolour versions of the more expansive view as etched for Staunton’s “Account” in: Maidstone Museums and Art Gallery; Yale Centre for British Art; a private collection, London (these last two both signed and dated 1795); and two, less finished, in the collection of the India Office Library, BL. These all, according to Legouix, exhibit slight variations in the placement and attitudes in the figures (Legouix, 1980, p. 66).Alexander noted his impression of the structure in his journal, writing on 22 October 1793 that the pagoda comprised “9 stories, [being] about 120 ft. in height” and was “a striking object being detached from any town and stand[ing] about 20 yards from the waters edge” (Legouix and Conner, 1981, p. 36). The body of water just seen on the right of the BM watercolour is the Chinese Grand Canal (otherwise known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal), the longest canal or artificial river in the world. For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
