Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is listed as: “20 A Soldier in his full uniform – – – – vide Costume of China.”Plate 17 (aquatint) in “The Costume of China” (published 1805; etched lettering below the image: “W. Alexander fecit” and “London Publish’d March 1.st 1799, by G. Nicol, Pallmall”) depicts the same subject, though the decoration of the soldier’s coat differs and he carries a sword and flag in addition to the bow and arrows. The accompanying text informs the reader about the uniform: the coat is made of quilted nankeen embellished to give the impression of armour or mail; the characters on the breastplate of the coat denote the corps to which the soldier belongs; the box around the waist is used to store arrow heads, bowstrings and other miscellaneous items; and the spear protruding from the top of the helmet is surmounted by a tassel of dyed horsehair. There is another version of this drawing at the Yale Centre for British Art, in which the quiver of arrows is on the soldier’s opposite shoulder, he carries a sword in his left hand and a tobacco pouch is suspended from the belt at his waist. For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
