Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “53 Various Chinese Tombs & Monuments. Vide the Costume of China.” Plate 15 (aquatint) of “The Costume of China” (published 1805; etched lettering below the image: “W. Alexander fecit” and “London Publish’d, Sep.t 1.st 1798, by G. Nicol. Pallmall”), entitled “View of a burying-place, near Han-tcheou-fou.” The tallest tomb and the rectangular one with Chinese characters on the front of it (on the right) in the BM drawing appear in this plate, which also includes tombs and features not present in the BM drawing. In the accompanying text in “The Costume of China”, Alexander identifies the tallest tomb as one characteristic of affluent families.The tomb on the far left of the BM watercolour appears to be the model for that depicted by Alexander in Plate 28 of “Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Chinese” (published 1814; etched lettering below the image: “Pub’d, Jan.y 1814, by J. Murray, Albemarle Street”), entitled “Visit to the Grave of a Relation.”For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
