Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “55 Lui-fung-ta, the Temple of the thundering Winds, this building is situated near the Lake Sihou, by the City of Hang-tcheou fou. & is said to have been built prior to the famous great Wall, therefore it must have stood more than 2000 Years.” A drawing by Alexander of the temple of the thundering winds, set within a much more extensive landscape than that in the BM watercolour and seen from below, was engraved for Staunton’s “Account”. Plate 41 (etched lettering under image: “Alexander del.t”, “J. Landseer & T. Shirt, sculp.t” and “London. Published April 12, 1796, by G. Nicol”), described as depicting a “View of the Lake See-hoo, and tower of the thundering winds, take from the Vale of Tombs.” For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
