This drawing is described as: “27 A Chinese Pilot, who was onboard the Hindostan, to assist in navigating the Ship.”This drawing has a more substantial background than most of the others in this album. These watercolours generally differ from the plates in “The Costume of China” in that respect; in his published work, Alexander almost always situates his figure in a landscape with recognisably Chinese features (although these are not always topographically accurate).For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
