Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “81. AChinese Compass, & an Anchor of Wood. The Compass is described in Sir Geo: Staunton’s Acc.t. in Page 441 of Vol. 1.st The Anchor is made of a pondorous wood, strongly lark’d together & the points of the flukes are cupp’d with Iron, these anchors are in general use for vessels of 300 Tons & under -.” Alexander’s drawing of the compass is accompanied, in volume 1 of Staunton’s “Account”, by a long segment of text explicating the manufacture and use of Chinese compasses, and the meaning of the characters decorating them.For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
