Description:
Porcelain dish with ‘kraak’-type underglaze blue decoration. This dish has rounded sides and a broad moulded upturned rim with a bracket-lobed edge. It stands on a low inturned foot ring and has a glazed chatter-marked base, peppered with impurities. Grit from the kiln floor adheres to the foot ring. Inside, outlined in a dullish underglaze blue, are a goose and gander standing on a river bank with giant lotus and water weeds and in the background two flying geese approach with further flying birds indicated. This is surrounded by an eight-lobed medallion with alternating scale and maze patterns. The moulded cavetto and rim are treated as a single decorative area with eight large panels framing opposite pairs of fans and stylized motifs or double gourds with whisks. In between these are stylized peaches. The larger panels are separated by knots, framed either with fish-scale or with maze diaper. Outside eight large radiating panels show roundels containing butterflies and thin panels with lines.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Until relatively recently it was thought that such dishes with ‘kraak’-style underglaze blue decoration were made only for export, but some have also occasionally been found in tombs in China. For example, a similar dish was excavated in 1979 in the tomb of Zhu Yiyin, the Prince of Yixuan (1537-1603), in Nancheng, Jiangxi province. The prince’s tomb and those of his first wife Mme Li (1538-56) and second wife Mme Sun (1543-83), buried either side of him, were extremely lavish with a combined total of 460 gold, silver, jade, bronze, textiles and porcelain furnishings. However, only one ‘kraak’ porcelain plate was included in the burial.
