Description:
Porcelain dish painted in overglaze enamels. This dish has rounded flared sides and a tapering gritty foot. The design covers the whole surface of the dish inside. A boy is riding a water buffalo (see BM Franks. 1586), pointing with a whip in his right hand and holding a reign with his left hand. As the sun emerges from the clouds, he progresses through the countryside surrounded by a tall pine tree, ‘lingzhi’, rocks and flowering plants. Such subdued overglaze enamels are typical of the late Ming period. Outside the dish is plain except for the underglaze blue six-character Chenghua reign mark on the scored base.
