Description:
Porcelain dish with underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels. This shallow warped dish has rounded sides, a broad flat upturned rim and a tapering foot ring. A hairline crack, visible on the interior and exterior, has been repaired with gold and lacquer, making an attractive feature out of a flaw, consistent with Japanese taste. A ‘qilin’ surrounded by ‘ruyi’ clouds is reserved in white on an underglaze blue ground in a central roundel. Surrounding this, spreading over the cavetto and rim, are three octofoil cartouches outlined in green and red enamel, containing a ‘qilin’, a lion and a dragon with a ‘lingzhi’ fungus body, depicted in black, yellow, aubergine and green. In between these green ‘ruyi’ clouds grow out of the rim, outlined in black on a red ground. The base is marked with an underglaze blue square seal mark which reads 富 贵 佳 器 ‘Fu gui jia qi’ [Fine vessel for the rich and honourable].
