Description:
Dish. Coat of arms of Upton of Westmoreland, “Sable a cross moline argent; crest On a ducal coronet or, a war horse sable accoutred of the first”. Made of grisaille and enamelled porcelain, with four floral scrolls and a crest on the rim; diaper patterns and four cartouches in the well; enamelled arms in the centre. It seems most likely that this service was made for a descendant of Anthony Upton, who died a merchant in Seville in Spain in 1670. His son John was a wealthy East India merchant of London.
