Description:
Porcelain dish with underglaze blue decoration. This dish has rounded sides which curve inwards at the rim and stands on an inward-sloping foot ring. During the firing it has sunk in the centre and the base is consequently convex. A fierce dragon with flexed claws, prancing on its front legs, jaws clamped shut, is shown among lotus plants, ferns and duck weed. Unusually some of the lotus plants are painted in front of the dragon, adding depth to the design. Around the rim is a band of waves with white crests. Outside two dragons are depicted chasing each other through similar aquatic plants. The join of foot to dish, and the inner and outer rim, are emphasized by double lines. A six-character underglaze blue reign mark of the Xuande emperor appears on the base in a double ring.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The combination of the dragon and aquatic plants is extremely rare indeed. A Xuande mark and period dish with two fish and similar arrangement of aquatic plants is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei.
