Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1403-1424 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:incised, celadon-glazed,
Subjects:lotus,flower fungus
Dimensions:Diameter: 64 centimetres Height: 10.50 centimetres Weight: 16 kilograms
Description:
Large porcelain serving dish with incised decoration beneath a green glaze. This is the largest serving dish in the collection – once filled with food for a Near Eastern banquet it would have been extremely heavy. It has rounded sides and stands on a thick foot ring. It is incised with a design of peonies with three large blooms and foliage. In the cavetto are flowering plants and incised at the rim is a border of ‘lingzhi’ fungus scroll. Outside it is incised with lotus blooms. A large ring on the base is wiped free of glaze for it to be supported in the kiln. Such dishes were incredibly difficult to fire without warping because of their great size. This dish has been broken along one side and was riveted together, but the rivets have been replaced by a modern adhesive.
