Porcelain saucer-shaped dish. Fine white eggshell porcelain decorated in slip in the centre with two five-clawed dragons in profile with the flaming pearl, and around the sides with two similar dragons. It has an inscription on the base.

It is painted in translucent overglaze enamels with a scholar, seated beneath a blossoming prunus tree, watching petals fall to the ground. The title of this scene is given on the back of the dish as 惜春圖 (Xichun tu ‘picture of cherishing Spring’), preceded by a dedication 務齋 雅玩 (Wuzhai yawan ‘for the amusement of Wuzhai’). Wuzhai (Studio of Endeavour) was the studio name of Li Shimin. The iron-red seal reads惜花 居士 (Xihua jushi ‘the scholar who cherishes flowers’). The decoration is after the work of Jin Nong (AD 1687–1763), native of Renhe, one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou.
